    Childhood IQ of parents related to characteristics of their offspring: linking the Scottish Mental Survey 1932 to the Midspan Family Study.C. L. Hart, I. J. Deary, G. Davey Smith, M. N. Upton, L. J. Whalley, J. M. Starr, D. J. Hole, V. Wilson & G. C. M. Watt - 2005 - Journal of Biosocial Science 37 (5):623.
The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between childhood IQ of parents and characteristics of their adult offspring. It was a prospective family cohort study linked to a mental ability survey of the parents and set in Renfrew and Paisley in Scotland. Participants were 1921-born men and women who took part in the Scottish Mental Survey in 1932 and the Renfrew/Paisley study in the 1970s, and whose offspring took part in the Midspan Family study in 1996. There (...)

    The Experimental Study of Freudian Theories.Hans J. Eysenck & Glenn D. Wilson (eds.) - 2013 - Routledge.
Originally published in 1973 the editors of this book collected together those studies which had been considered at the time to yield the best evidence in support of Freudian theory, and found on close examination that they failed to provide any such proof. This paper argues that professionals who make boundary-related decisions should be guided by relationship-based practice. In our roles as service users and professionals, drawing from our lived experiences of professional relationships, we argue we need to move away from distance-based practice. This includes understanding the boundary stories and narratives that exist for all of us – including the people we support, other professionals, as well as the organisations and systems within which we work. When we are dealing with professional boundary (...)

The Benefits of Sensorimotor Knowledge: Body–Object Interaction Facilitates Semantic Processing.Paul D. Siakaluk, Penny M. Pexman, Christopher R. Sears, Kim Wilson, Keri Locheed & William J. Owen - 2008 - Cognitive Science 32 (3):591-605.
This article examined the effects of body–object interaction (BOI) on semantic processing. BOI measures perceptions of the ease with which a human body can physically interact with a word's referent. In Experiment 1, BOI effects were examined in 2 semantic categorization tasks (SCT) in which participants decided if words are easily imageable. Responses were faster and more accurate for high BOI words (e.g., mask) than for low BOI words (e.g., ship). In Experiment 2, BOI effects were examined in a semantic (...)

    Personalized medicine and genome-based treatments: Why personalized medicine ≠ individualized treatments.S. G. Nicholls, B. J. Wilson, D. Castle, H. Etchegary & J. C. Carroll - 2014 - Clinical Ethics 9 (4):135-144.
The sequencing of the human genome and decreasing costs of sequencing technology have led to the notion of ‘personalized medicine’. This has been taken by some authors to indicate that personalized medicine will provide individualized treatments solely based on one’s DNA sequence. We argue this is overly optimistic and misconstrues the notion of personalization. Such interpretations fail to account for economic, policy and structural constraints on the delivery of healthcare. Furthermore, notions of individualization based on genomic data potentially take us (...)

ObjectiveThe Spatial Learning Task of Lhermitte and Signoret is an object-location arbitrary associative learning task. The task was originally developed to evaluate adults with severe amnesia. It is currently used in populations where the memory system either is not yet fully developed or where it has been compromised (e.g. epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, electroconvulsive therapy, cerebrovascular disease and dementia). Normative data have been published for paediatric cohorts and for older adults, however no data exist for the intervening adult years.MethodHere, we (...)

These excerpts are presented with a minimum of editing, to preserve the extemporaneous, informal, oral character of the conversation. The excerpts end with a fragmentary comment by E. O. Wilson, conveying the spirit of the actual conversation, which (...)

This collection of essays on themes in the work of John Locke , George Berkeley , and David Hume , provides a deepened understanding of major issues raised in the Empiricist tradition. In exploring their shared belief in the experiential nature of mental constructs, The Empiricists illuminates the different methodologies of these great Enlightenment philosophers and introduces students to important metaphysical and epistemological issues including the theory of ideas, personal identity, and skepticism. It will be especially useful in courses devoted (...)

    Abstract morphemes and lexical representation: the CV-Skeleton in Arabic.Sami Boudelaa & William D. Marslen-Wilson - 2004 - Cognition 92 (3):271-303.
Overlaps in form and meaning between morphologically related words have led to ambiguities in interpreting priming effects in studies of lexical organization. In Semitic languages like Arabic, however, linguistic analysis proposes that one of the three component morphemes of a surface word is the CV-Skeleton, an abstract prosodic unit coding the phonological shape of the surface word and its primary syntactic function, which has no surface phonetic content (McCarthy, J. J. (1981). A prosodic theory of non-concatenative morphology, Linguistic Inquiry, 12 (...)

    Gibson’s ecological approach – a model for the benefits of a theory driven psychology.Sabrina Golonka & Andrew D. Wilson - 2012 - Avant: Trends in Interdisciplinary Studies 3 (2):40-53.
Unlike most other sciences, psychology has no true core theory to guide a coherent research programme. It does have James J Gibson’s ecological approach to visual perception, however, which we suggest should serve as an example of the benefits a good theory brings to psychological research. Here we focus on an example of how the ecological approach has served as a guide to discovery, shaping and constraining a recent hypothesis about how humans perform coordinated rhythmic movements (Bingham 2004a, b). Early (...)

    Modelling the effects of semantic ambiguity in word recognition.Jennifer M. Rodd, M. Gareth Gaskell & William D. Marslen-Wilson - 2004 - Cognitive Science 28 (1):89-104.
Most words in English are ambiguous between different interpretations; words can mean different things in different contexts. We investigate the implications of different types of semantic ambiguity for connectionist models of word recognition. We present a model in which there is competition to activate distributed semantic representations. The model performs well on the task of retrieving the different meanings of ambiguous words, and is able to simulate data reported by Rodd, Gaskell, and Marslen‐Wilson [J. Mem. Lang. 46 (2002) 245] (...)

Language and the Pursuit of Truth. [REVIEW]J. D. Bastable - 1957 - Philosophical Studies (Dublin) 7:196-199.
This short monograph laudably presents itself as a lucid introduction for the plain man and schoolboy to the problems of language, with which contemporary British philosophers from Moore to Wittgenstein’s disciples have been preoccupied. Mr. Wilson, an experienced teacher of semantics, holds that the solution of human problems and disputes other than through force must be based upon that science of linguistic communication. If we are to be saved from excessive propaganda and demagogy, we must first understand the meaning (...)
